A quick and dirty (actually, muddy) Bloom Day post

I'm short of time and dry weather this month. But I found some blooms to share and even a surprise out in the wet, wet garden.

First up, a bit of a cheat: I bought Grevillea junipera 'Lava Cascade' at the Yard Garden and Patio show last month. But it's in bloom, so it gets a photo and a mention today. Yes, I'm actually going to risk my heart again with this beloved Grevillea which I grew and lost last year as 'Low Red'.

Mahonia aquifolium is budding hard and just opening.

It looks great backed by the neighbor's garage wall we painted "Chocolate".

I showed Vaccinium ovatum last Bloom Day, and it's still going strong.

We have three camellias that are covered with fat, pregnant buds, but only one actual bloom so far.

It's a perfect flower if you can ignore the white over-spray specks from last summer's paint job.

Daphne odora is perfuming the entire back garden.

Arctostaphylos x 'Austin Griffiths' is putting on a soft pink show.

Helleborus argutifolius, despite three moves (one late last fall), has decided to bloom like crazy. I tried to find more of this amazing performer, but no one seems to have any of the argutifolius.

And last, here's the surprise: Loropetalum chinese 'Sizzling Pink' has one tiny bloom. There aren't any other buds on the plant, so I guess it's an anomaly....I'll take it!

Thanks go out to Carol at May Dreams Gardens for hosting Bloom Day every month. Pop over there to see blooms galore!

    1. March IS good, despite the rain! Though I have to say your California garden with its colorful denizens piques my zonal envy this month, Denise.

  2. I wonder if WE have flowers in bloom? It's been hard to go outside.

That Grevillea junipera is one CraAaAazy flower!

    1. Michael, go outside...this minute!
I loved this description of Grevillea flowers: they look like a shrimp and a toothbrush got together and had a baby.

  3. Beautiful. I love that Grevillia. Is it as crazy hot out there as it is on the east coast?

    1. Chris, surely you joke! It's been between 45 and 55 during the days, which might sound good, but when it's this wet it can be bone-chilling.

  4. So glad you're giving Grevillea another try. Which YGP booth did you find the G. junipera 'Lava Cascade' at? I would have grabbed one too if I had seen it.

(and I don't know whether to laugh or cry at ChrisU's question about it being hot out here...I'm sick of this weather!)

    1. Loree, it was at the Xera table in the Green Marketplace. I'd forgotten the alternative "Lava Cascade" moniker and almost passed on it myself.

  5. I nearly bought a Grevillea in the fall sale, but decided to wait for spring. Looks like it was the right call.

  7. Hooray! Something is better than nothing and you've got several somethings. Nice ones too. I need to check my Daphne this weekend. That scent is to die for isn't it?

Fingers crossed on the Grevillea this time. I've lost two and have given up. At least until I see another one in bloom...
