I like red.

I rarely wear red, but evidence indicates there's no shortage of it in my garden:

Wonderful red stems on this little Japanese maple seedling. They glow when lit from behind.

Sadly, this Mahonia nervosa is dying, and I don't know why, since its neighbor Mahonia are quite healthy. But at least it's expiring in fiery, red glory.

The hummingbirds have arrived now that Agastache 'Acapulco Orange' is in bloom.

Achillea 'Summer Wine' is very red.

Crocosmia 'Lucifer' also attracts hummers.

A lot of my reds tend toward orange. It's probably because of the Spanish pirate in my ancestry. This is Punica granatum 'True Dwarf', a dwarf pomegranate.

The red spike and thorns on Agave parryi var. truncata are just fabulous.

The young foliage of Loropetalum chinese 'Sizzling Pink' is a purple-red.

Astilbe arendsii 'Glow' is still tightly closed, but will bloom with glowing red flowers.

Sedum spurium 'Dragon's Blood'?

Whatever sedum it is, it has a great red flower.

Dark-red new leaves on the Malus 'Prairifire'.

And a few red crabapple fruits.

Red and green sedums in a succulent planting.

Okay, I'm cheating with this red tag, but the real point is the plant it's attached to. It's a clumping bamboo and I'll post about it soon!

  1. Yea for your clumping bamboo! And the Agave parryi of course. I looked at the Mahonia thinking how beautiful it was...before I read that it was dying. That sucks.

  2. what do you think of uncinia rubra? does it lean a bit too much to the brown-reds? i've been loving this plant contrasting with yellow ground covers.

marbotts sells nice one gallons for $10. not an amazing price but its very hard to find this plant in that size.

  3. Yum! Red! Just a speck of it can breathe life into the dullest landscape. Yours looks to be anything but dull.

  4. Beautiful reds, Jane. I have Uncinia. It's a replacement for my dead one thanks to last December's chill. I bet you'd like it.

Yep. Looks like Dragon's Blood to me. Your Agastache is to die for.

  5. Oh I like your red, especially how so many of them get their color from leaf, bark, and fruit. I find red hard to resist. When I had had it with all he flowers in the yard and dug out many many flowers, somehow I never got around to the crocosmia lucifer, and now I love it when they bloom.. And now I have been eyeing the small crocosmia I've been seeing around, with the orangey flowers, although I don't have any Spanish pirates in my background.
