Bloom Day July 2012, Color Wheel Version

Summer's finally in full swing here in Portland!
Here's a color wheel look at what's blooming at Longview Ranch this month.

Red:
Crocosmia 'Lucifer'.
Helenium 'Moorheim Beauty'.
Red-orange:
Crocosmia pottsii 'Culzean Pink'.

Agastache 'Acapulco Orange'.
Phygelius 'Passionate'.

Orange:
Abutilon 'Tangerine'.
Kniphofia 'Timothy'

Yellow-Orange:
Zantedeschia 'Flame'.

Eschscholzia californica

Yellow:
Helichrisum Angustifolium

Coreopsis 'Zagreb.'

Yellow-green:
Sedum rupestre 'Angelina'.

-->

Kniphofia species

Green: (cheating a little, since they're just budding up)
Eucomis pallidiflora ssp.pole-evansii

Arctostaphylos x 'Austin Griffiths'. I think/hope this is the beginning of a second bloom for this year.
Blue-green:
Agave titanota (okay, not really a flower, but the perfect blue-green for my purpose.)

Blue:
Salvia 'Black and Blue'

Hyssopus officinalis 'Dwarf Blue'

Blue-violet:
Campanula americana, from our Portland Garden Bloggers Plant Exchange earlier this year (thank you, Ann!)
Eryngium planum 'Jade Frost'.

Violet:
Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens'

Lavender species

Red-Violet:
Eucomus comosa 'Sparkling Burgundy'

Cistus x purpureus

Astilbe arendsii 'Glow'

Symphoricarpus albus. The bees are completely focused on this PNW native.

Which leads us to...

White:
In discussing the plant color wheel, Kym Pokorny says white is often the most dominant color in the garden. I know I have almost as many white-flowered plants in my garden as I do all the other colors put together.

Nandina domestica
 Yucca filamentosa 'Bright Edge'.

Cistus x obtusifolius. This plant just blooms on, month after month.

Digitalis volunteer

Tiny Dianthus noeanus

Huge Acanthus mollis

Trachelospermum jasminoides 'Confederate Cream'

Rosa 'Sally Holmes'
Along with the green of foliage, white flowers cool down the garden, and serve as the perfect neutral counterpoint to all the intensity of color-wheel blossoms.

  6. What a fun Bloomday post Jane! I really enjoyed seeing so much of your garden, but I think my very favorite photo is the first one. That hot red of the Crocosmia with the cool blue of the Eucalyptus, just gorgeous! Plus I bet the Eucalyptus keeps the Crocosmia from falling over...

  13. Who would think I'd go to a ranch to freshen up. Lucifer is always a fav (in context) but your image was refreshing. I finally found a yucca I could love and you finished off with a beautiful bunch of roses. Best.

  14. I love how you organized by color...great idea! The first shot, pairing the fiery red of the Crocosmia with the cool, powdery blue of the Eucalyptus is stunning...truly a masterful combination!

  15. Hot, hot, hot! Those are the colors I wanted in my Summer garden but somehow a bunch of lavender and peach and even white has snuck in. It's chaos out there.

And I agree with Scott--that crocosmia/euc combo is a masterpiece! I'm also swooning over your crocosmia'Culzean Pink'. If you ever need to divide that thing, I'm your gal ;-) I have a couple other crocosmia weirdos that you might like too.
