Wednesday vignette - an undisturbed corner of my back garden

With our patio and path project creating chaos in most of my garden, I've been pretty much on a blogging hiatus. Don't get me wrong - even though it's going pretty slowly, I'm very excited about the progress of the project. It's cool to see our vision for the spaces taking shape, but I am looking forward to it being done so I can put the garden back together.

Out taking pictures of the project yesterday, I found a corner of my garden that is still untrammeled and soothing.
Now, if I pull back a bit, you'll see what's in the foreground of this little corner.

And if I really pull back, you can see the entire patio space in the foreground.
As we wait somewhat impatiently for the concrete contractor (hopefully next week?) let's just re-frame back to the plants, okay?
A little cropping creates a tranquil scene for Anna's Wednesday Vignette meme over at Flutter and Hum. Less exciting, yes, but infinitely more soothing.

  1. It's good that there are still some spots that have a peaceful vibe, even if you have to crop out the chaos.

  2. What is the name of the burgundy colored grass, Jane? Probably a Pennisetum, I'm guessing ... and not hardy, I'm also guessing. But dang, she's a beaut! ... Looking good on the project too. Hurry up you silly contractors! Jane wants her garden back!

    1. Bingo on the Pennisetum, Grace. It's P. purpureum 'Vertigo' and it does make me weak in the knees. Sadly, it is an annual and this is my second year growing it. Next summer I'm ordering it earlier so I have the whole summer to enjoy it!

  3. I love the burgundy grass, too. But I doubt it would love our winters. My pennisetum 'Fireworks' will be goners when we did below freezing this weekend.

    1. It's Pennisetum purpureum ''Vertigo', and a wonderful annual from Proven Winners, even in our zone 8a. Definitely worth searching out early in summer!

  4. We're in chaos too, since R decided to build new stairs and paint the deck. Sanity demands that we focus on the good parts. Your results are going to be fab.

    1. Although it feels like an ever-receding goal, Ricki, I know the end will come. Hopefully, it's before a really cold snap, so I can replant all the perennials I lifted.

  5. What a tough time of the year to have your garden in chaos, then again starting spring 2016 with the new digs will be fab!

  6. Yes, focus on the good parts, but seriously - that new patio will be well worth the wait. I can't wait to see it! The Vertigo you got me is the star in one of my planter. Love that thing! This year, I have seen another one two tall black grasses that intrigue me P. 'Dark Knight' and P. 'Black Stockings'. I'm especially intrigued by Black Stockings - it's supposed to have nice black flowers!

    1. Those sound intriguing, Anna. And If either of those Pennisetums are hardy, I'm in for sure!

  7. The wonders of cropping. But I'm sure the patio will be well worth the wait. I'm glad I wasn't around while my parents were having work done around the house: regrading parts of the yard, installing the dry creek bed, and building a new back patio and front entrance. I'm sure it was a mess, but I like the results.
